Programme Introduction

Chemistry major will be offered in 2025/26.

The co-terminal double degree programme - BSc(IEM)&BEd(SCI) encompasses two mutually reinforcing features. First, the Discipline Major in Integrated Environmental Management (IEM) provides interdisciplinary training in science, computing, socioeconomic aspects, and regulations, and includes an internship in the environmental management area, enabling graduates to address environmental issues from multiple perspectives. Second, the Education Major in Science enriches students’ pedagogical content knowledge and teaching skills, includes field experience to understand science curricula in schools, develops teaching skills, nurtures teacher professionalism, and enables graduates with the capability to teach Science from Key Stages 1 to 4, including primary level, junior secondary level, and senior secondary level (Biology/Chemistry which will be offered in alternate years). The two features of the programme widen students’ interdisciplinary horizons, enhance their exposure to STEAM-related subjects, and expand their experiences with environmental science.

(2) Students admitted into this programme are required to visit the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and/or other parts of Mainland China. The programme may also require students to participate in other non-local learning experience for completion of the programme. While the visits are subsidised, students are required to contribute part of the estimated cost of the visits ("students’ contribution"), whereas any personal entertainment, meals expenses, travel document fee and personal insurance costs shall be at students’ own expense. The estimated cost of the visits and students’ contribution for students admitted to the coming cohort is yet to be available due to a variety of factors such as inflation of cost of the visits, trip duration, traveling expenses, the exchange rate, etc.

(3) Starting from the 2024/25 cohort, students admitted to the full-time Bachelor of Education and Double Degree programmes are required to fulfil the “Exit Requirements for Teachers’ Professional Conduct and Ethics”, which consists of three components: 1) Fulfilment of assessment requirements of Field Experience; 2) Satisfactory completion of two required courses related to Teachers’ Professional Conduct and Ethics; 3) Fulfilment of relevant co-curricular requirement.

Field Experience

Field experience (FE) is a core domain in both the pre-service and in-service teacher education programmes at the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) which aims to support students to develop the graduate attributes of the University, i.e., Professional Excellence, Ethical Responsibilities and Innovation (PEER &I), and to nurture them to be outstanding and caring educators and professionals who contribute constructively to sustainable social and economic development in Hong Kong and beyond. Career Prospects/Professional Recognition

Graduates will have acquired sufficient subject matter knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge in their chosen science subjects so as to individually teach Science in primary level and junior secondary level, and Chemistry in senior secondary level. They may apply for registration as Registered Teacher (RT). Furthermore, graduates can seek employment across a wide range of fields, including Environmental Consultancy, Non-government Environmental Organisations, Public & Private Sectors in Environmental Management, Environmental Testing, etc.

Note: Students admitted into this programme are normally assigned a focus of study (i.e. primary or secondary level) by the end of their first year of study. The focus of study will be reflected in the arrangements for their Field Experience and adopted for the purpose of application for Registered Teacher in Hong Kong upon graduation. This programme is designed to provide students with the disciplinary and professional competency to teach in both primary and secondary schools. However, recognition of Registered Teacher in primary or secondary schools in Hong Kong is subject to the decision of the Education Bureau (EDB). Graduates of this programme are required to approach the Teacher Registration Team of the EDB to submit applications directly and all applications will be independently assessed by the EDB.

Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Integrated Environmental Management

The five-year bachelor programme in the Department of SES provided me with professional knowledge in both scientific studies and educational theories to prepare for each stage. Experienced educators shared their valuable experiences with us. This sharing allowed us to critically reflect on our teaching in integrating science and pedagogical knowledge according to different situations in schools. The programmes combined rigorous academic study and experiential learning in authentic settings. All of these prepared me to be more compassionate, creative and advocated for the education field and helped me prepare for the Award.
