Programme Introduction

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Speech Pathology and Rehabilitation programme offers an innovative interdisciplinary approach to professional training in speech pathology, also known as speech therapy. This programme goes beyond traditional discipline-specific knowledge by integrating essential skills and insights from various fields to meet the evolving needs of healthcare professionals. Students will benefit from an integrated minor in Psychology and Well-being, providing a comprehensive understanding of related fields. Practical experience is enhanced through practicum courses and internships in real-world settings. The programme also focuses on interprofessional mentoring, entrepreneurial activities, and global engagement to promote collaboration, innovation, and global perspectives.

#This programme is specially designed to meet the Hong Kong Institute of Speech Therapists (HKIST) accreditation requirements. After the programme is accredited, graduates will be eligible to apply for registration as Accredited Speech Therapists under the Health Bureau, HKSAR. Graduates practicing speech therapy outside Hong Kong must comply with local regulations.

Notes:
(1) Classes will be held in Tai Po Campus and Tseung Kwan O Study Centre / North Point Study Centre / Sports Centre / Kowloon Tong Satellite Study Centre as decided by the University. 
(2) Students admitted into this programme are required to visit the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and/or other parts of Mainland China. The programme may also require students to participate in other non-local learning experience for completion of the programme. While the visits are subsidised, students are required to contribute part of the estimated cost of the visits ("students’ contribution"), whereas any personal entertainment, meals expenses, travel document fee and personal insurance costs shall be at students’ own expense. The estimated cost of the visits and students’ contribution for students admitted to the coming cohort is yet to be available due to a variety of factors such as inflation of cost of the visits, trip duration, traveling expenses, the exchange rate, etc.

Internship

This course provides students with exposure to a diverse range of speech-pathology and rehabilitation service provision across a broad range of health care, educational, and community settings. Students, as an intern role, will have practice on the screening, assessment, and diagnosis of individuals with speech, language, hearing, literacy, communication and swallowing disorders, and on the re/habilitation and intervention in individual, group and consultative formats. The practicum will be conducted in both child and adult settings.

Career Prospects/Professional Recognition

Graduates of the programme are capable as speech therapists in hospitals, clinics, NGOs, schools, and social service agencies*, or as research associates at the university focused on speech, language and hearing.
[*This new programme is pending accreditation by the Hong Kong Institute of Speech Therapists (HKIST). Graduates will be eligible to practice as speech therapists upon accreditation of the programme.]
