In general, the medium of instruction is Chinese and/or English. Applicant’s adequate proficiency in both Chinese and English is required (except participants in PGDE(ECE) programme). Please see below for more detailed information.
PGDE (Primary) Programme
The medium of instruction is Chinese (Cantonese) and/or English. Applicant’s adequate proficiency in both Chinese and English is required. Putonghua is adopted as the language of instruction for courses related to the Putonghua subject, while English is adopted as the language of instruction for relevant courses, as appropriate. TSS1 English participants are required to take Education Studies core courses in English, if available. Participants of other Teaching Subject Studies can choose to take additional language courses to enhance their English proficiency, if desired.
PGDE (Secondary) Programme
The medium of instruction is Chinese (Cantonese) and/or English. Applicant's adequate proficiency in both Chinese and English is required. Participants will be required to take 25% (about 6 credit points) of the total programme credit points (excluding those for the Field Experience course) through the medium of English. English major participants are required to take all courses through the medium of English, if available. Chinese major participants of FT PGDE(S) are required to take one course through the medium of Putonghua.
PGDE (Early Childhood Education) Programme
Full-time Programme
The medium of instruction is Chinese and/or English for the full-time programme. Applicant’s adequate proficiency in both Chinese and English is required, if appropriate. English is adopted as the language of instruction for relevant courses. Combined classes with students of the part-time programme would be arranged where necessary.
The full-time programme offers a stream of Chinese and English (CEMI) and an English stream (EMI). Applicants have to choose which medium of instruction they prefer upon application.
Part-time Programme
The part-time programme offers a Chinese stream (CMI) and an EMI. Applicants have to choose which medium of instruction they prefer upon application.
- Chinese as the medium of instruction
The medium of instruction is mainly Chinese. English may be adopted as the language of instruction for relevant courses, as appropriate.
- English as the medium of instruction
The medium of instruction is mainly English.
PGDE (Professional and Vocational Education) Programme
The medium of instruction is mainly Chinese. English and/or Putonghua is adopted as the language of instruction for relevant courses, as appropriate.
Notes to Non-Chinese Speaking and Putonghua Speaking Applicants
Non-Chinese speaking applicants who apply for PGDE (Primary) and PGDE (Secondary) programme should choose the One-TSS Route (English) or MSS in English. For PGDE (ECE) programme, non-Chinese speaking and Putonghua speaking applicants should indicate English as the medium of instruction in the field of "Class" (subject to sufficient enrolment) when they submit their application. Putonghua-speakers should apply for Putonghua / Chinese / English as TSS / MSS in PGDE (Primary) / PGDE (Secondary) programme. PGDE(Secondary) - Design and Technology / History / Information Technology and Science Subjects are mainly conducted in English. Other subjects are mainly conducted in Chinese (Cantonese) and / or English.
