Programme Aims and Intended Learning Outcomes

This programme caters for professionals involved in pathways that offer an alternative to academic studies such as career-oriented studies, associate degrees, vocational professional training and re-training. The programme aims to enable students to develop and integrate the professional knowledge, skills and attitudes required for effective teaching and learning of professional and vocational education (PVE) in different settings, including Applied Learning context.

Upon completion of the Programme, students will be able to:

PILO1 Demonstrate professional knowledge and competence in designing, managing and evaluating a range of learning and teaching practices within the PVE context;
PILO2 Evaluate critically the effectiveness of different teaching strategies and assessment approaches and to make continuous improvement in the PVE context through lifelong learning;
PILO3 Demonstrate a critical understanding of contemporary issues in the PVE context pertinent to current practical knowledge, policies and practices; and
PILO4 Demonstrate a practical understanding of ethical issues in PVE practice to contextualise the learning and its application to one's own professional practice.

Programme Structure

This is a two-year part-time programme comprising 30 credit points (cps). The programme curriculum covers the following four components:

3. Electives Studies 6 cps
4. Field Experience 6 cps

Programme Orientation

All students must attend a programme orientation which includes information sessions about the curriculum, campus facilities and services.

General Methods and Education Studies

The General Methods and Education Studies components provide students with a substantial grounding in the principles and practices of teaching and assessment relevant to the education of young adults in the professional and vocational education (PVE) context. These include a broad understanding of human development and the learning process; theories of adolescent and adult learning; approaches to teaching strategies; instructional design and assessment; developing learning resources and contemporary issues in the whole field of PVE. The courses include:

Elective Studies

The Elective Studies component offers students with the extended studies that may be curriculum related or professional development oriented. Students are required to choose two out of the following courses according to their own professional needs and/or interests.

  • Enhancing Participation and Engagement in Learning
  • Promoting and Understanding the Development of Young Adults
  • The Reflective Practitioner in PVE
  • Learners with Specific Learning Needs
  • Developing Collaborative Networks for Enhancing Applied Learning Curriculum Development in PVE
  • Independent Project

Field Experience

The Field Experience component, as a platform for further professional development, builds on students' existing teaching experience and knowledge of their work settings. Students are expected to use relevant professional and vocational education practice to demonstrate the integration of skills and knowledge from other courses and their competence as teachers. Consistent with the University's practice in Field Experience, students will be visited and provided with feedback on their work by their University Supervisors and colleagues in the workplace.

  • Field Experience II

Mode of Delivery

The Programme is delivered through face-to-face teaching, non-face-to-face (online and/or supervised) study and independent learning. The ratio of face-to-face teaching to non-face-to-face study is normally 6:4. Each 3-cp course includes 21-24 hours of face-to-face teaching, 15-18 hours of non-face-to-face study, and 78 additional hours of other independent learning, making 117 hours of total student effort. Classes are normally held in weekday evenings and/or on Saturdays in Tseung Kwan O Study Centre/ Kowloon Tong Satellite Study Centre/ Tai Po Campus/ North Point Study Centre, while other arrangements will be made when necessary as decided by the University.

Methods of Teaching and Learning

A variety of teaching approaches, such as lectures, case studies, discussions, presentations, experiential activities, problem-solving activities, online learning and directed study, will be adopted. All teaching and learning activities emphasise inquiry, application and reflection.

Assessments

A range of assessment strategies will be used throughout the courses to facilitate and monitor students' professional development. These strategies include: case studies, field studies, online discussions, instructional planning, projects, review reports and presentations. All assessments are criterion referenced.

Medium of Instruction

The medium of instruction is mainly Chinese. English and/or Putonghua is adopted as the language of instruction for relevant courses, as appropriate.

Information Technology Competency in Education (ITCE)

Participants who are enrolled in education programmes [leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)] are required to fulfill the ITCE requirement by completing one of the pathways before graduation. Block Credit Transfer

The programme recognises students' prior learning and grants block credit transfer on an individual basis. Block credit transfer may be granted up to 50% of the total credit requirements for award. Applicant who has completed the following VTC Training Programme(s) may apply for Block Credit Transfer and applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis: 

  1. "Introduction to Teaching (INT)" – a block credit transfer of one of the two Elective Studies courses;
  2. "Key Skills Programme (KS)" – a block credit transfer of Independent Project course on a condition of completing an additional work on the project related to key skills; and
  3. "An In-service Education and Training Programme for IVE Teachers (INSET)" – a block credit transfer of two equivalent courses, "Strategies for Learning and Teaching in Applied Learning", and "Enhancing Participation and Engagement in Learning".

Entrance Requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants should normally: 

  • hold a recognised Bachelor's degree, or equivalent; and
  • hold a teaching post in a PVE context.

Priority will be given to applicants already teaching Applied Learning subjects.

Shortlisted applicants may be required to attend an interview.
