Part A – Application
Postgraduate Diploma in Education Programme (PGDE) aims to prepare university graduates to become competent and confident teachers in schools in Hong Kong. If you are holding a recognised bachelor’s degree and wish to receive teacher training, PGDE would be a good choice for you.
It is subject to your personal interest, aspiration and professional needs. Applicants who are not serving teachers should apply for full-time PGDE programmes, which are:
- PGDE (Primary) (One-year Full-time)
- PGDE (Secondary) (One-year Full-time)
- PGDE (Early Childhood Education) (One-year Full-time)
Applicants who are serving teachers in schools in Hong Kong should apply for part-time PGDE programmes, which are:
- PGDE (Primary) (Two-year Part-time)
- PGDE (Secondary) (Two-year Part-time)
- PGDE (Early Childhood Education) (Two-year Part-time)
- PGDE (Professional and Vocational Education) (Two-year Part-time)
Yes. You can submit application for more than one PGDE programme. However, you can only submit one application in each programme. Also, you can only choose one TSS1 / TSS2 / MSS in PGDE (Primary) / (Secondary) programme OR one class in PGDE(ECE) programme.
You are required to submit the documents listed below in support of your application. Documents should be uploaded directly via EdUHK Online Admission System (www.eduhk.hk/acadprog/online). You may be required to submit additional documents on a need basis.
- Academic qualification(s) (post-secondary education): official certificate(s) and transcript(s) with complete record on the courses attended, examination results and date of completion/award. Final year students may provide the latest transcript and official testimonial (certifying your enrollment in the programme) at the application stage;
Applicants who obtained degrees from universities in Mainland China are required to provide Online Verification Report of Higher Education Degree Certificate (中國高等教育學位在線驗證報告) and Online Verification Report of Higher Education Qualification Certificate (教育部學歷證書電子註冊備案表) issued by the CHSI (學信網) [www.chsi.com.cn/xlcx/bgcx.jsp] with a validity period of six months. Both Bachelor’s / Master’s Degree Certificate (學士/碩士學位證書) and Bachelor’s / Master’s Graduation Certificate (本科/碩士畢業證書) are also required;
- Certificates of HKALE, HKDSE and HKCEE (for applicants applying TSS2 in Chinese; General Studies; Information Technology; Mathematics; Physical Education; Putonghua or Special Needs);
- Official score report(s) of language test results (e.g. IELTS / TOEFL / GCE / CET6 / PSC / TAPP / LPAT) (Note: CET6 holders are required to provide verification certificate (成績證明) issued by the National Education Examinations Authority (中國教育考試網) [bbcjzm.neea.edu.cn/].);
- Appointment letter / employment contract of your current teaching position (for applicants of part-time PGDE(Primary, Secondary or PVE));
- Completed recommendation form (for applicants of part-time PGDE(ECE)); and
- Reference letters / certificates of participations / achievements in sports or music / other supporting documents relevant to your application (for applicants of TSS / MSS in Physical Education or Music).
Please do not send any original certificates to the University in any circumstances as the University will not be responsible for any documents mislaid. However, original documents of the qualifications stated in the application must be presented for verification at or before registration. Failure to do so shall lead to disqualification of the application and any offer made will be rescinded. To confirm the offer, the University may require you to apply for official transcripts and/or score reports of public examinations to be sent directly to us from the issuing universities / authorities before programme registration. You may also be required to provide certified true copies of your academic documents before programme registration.
Applicants who have attended international institutions whose transcripts are in a language other than Chinese or English must submit those transcripts with officially certified English translations.
Yes. If you are selected for admission to your applied programme, your registration will be confirmed subject to your successful completion of the degree studies before the programme begins in late August 2023. When you submit the online application, please upload a supporting document (e.g. a copy of your transcript/testimonial/online grade results) showing your final year studies in a bachelor’s degree.
Yes. Sometimes, conditional offers may be made to candidates without holding a teaching post, subject to availability of space. However, priority of admission offer will be given to in-service teachers. Also, you will need to obtain a teaching post recognised by the University before programme registration. Otherwise, the University may withdraw the admission offer made to you or you may need to make your own arrangements for Field Experience of the selected TSS / MSS during the programme study, subject to the approval of the University.
For part-time PGDE (Early Childhood Education), you should be a serving teacher in an early childhood education setting in Hong Kong and submit a recommendation form signed by the principal of your serving kindergarten.
For entry to a PGDE subject you are expected to have studied that subject, or a very closely related one at the undergraduate degree level. Simply put, we look for a strong academic background in the subject you wish to study at PGDE. But if you apply for subjects like English, Putonghua or Special Needs, we will consider applicants graduating in other subjects.
No. Once you have submitted your application, you can’t change your chosen programme, subject(s), class and study mode. You are advised to make sure your choice of programme(s) and subject(s) are correct before submitting an application.

Part B – Non-local qualifications / Non-local applicants / Non-Cantonese speakers
Non-Chinese speaking applicants should choose One-TSS Route English or MSS English, i.e. English as the only Teaching Subject Studies in PGDE(Primary) or English as Major Subject Studies in PGDE(Secondary).
If you are a Putonghua-speaker, you can apply for TSS Putonghua/Chinese/English in PGDE(Primary) or MSS Chinese/English in PGDE(Secondary).
In the 2023 entry, we will offer two streams in full-time and part-time PGDE (Early Childhood Education) programme (subject to sufficient enrolment), i.e. English as the MOI stream and Chinese as the MOI stream. Non-Chinese (Cantonese) speaking applicants should indicate English as the medium of instruction in the field of "Class" when they submit their applications for the programme.
The University accepts applicants holding non-local degrees provided that they are at a level equivalent to a recognised local bachelor's degree. Applicants may be required to provide the "Report for Qualifications Assessment" issued by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) in support of their applications.
Applicants who obtained degrees from universities in Mainland China are required to provide Online Verification Report of Higher Education Degree Certificate (中國高等教育學位在線驗證報告) and Online Verification Report of Higher Education Qualification Certificate (教育部學歷證書電子註冊備案表) issued by the CHSI (學信網) [www.chsi.com.cn/xlcx/bgcx.jsp] with a validity period of six months. They should also hold both Bachelor’s / Master’s Degree Certificate (學士/碩士學位證書) and Bachelor's / Master's Graduation Certificate (本科/碩士畢業證書) issued by a recognised university. The University will assess applicants' non-local qualifications on an individual basis.
We welcome applications from local and non-local applicants. Starting from the 2019/20 intake cohort, a new definition of Non-local Students (NLS) has been adopted in accordance with the HKSAR Government policy. Definition of local and non-local applicants is as listed here. Non-local students are expected to pay a higher fee.
When you submit an application, you are required to indicate clearly which document you are holding for study. You may be asked to provide a copy of your HKID card/passport/visa to support your application during the admission process. If the documents produced do not correspond to your local / non-local status entered in the application form, any offers made to you may be revoked and all fees paid will not be refunded. It is always your responsibility to inform the University about the change of your condition of study by providing relevant documentary proof to email@example.com as soon as possible.
If you are required to apply for a student visa in order to study in Hong Kong, it is mandatory that your student visa must apply through our Global Affairs Office (GAO). For more information on student visa application, please visit the GAO's website at www.eduhk.hk/gao (click into Admission ->; Pre-arrival Information ->; Visa Application and Extension). You are also required to note that English speaking applicants will only be considered for admission to English as TSS / MSS and Putonghua speaking applicants will only be considered for admission to English, Chinese and Putonghua as TSS / MSS.
The estimated cost per year is about HK$183,170, including a tuition fee of HK$140,000 (subject to annual review), HK$13,170 for hostel fee of Standard Room (subject to annual review) and around HK$30,000 for other general expenses. If you enroll in English or Putonghua subject as TSS1/MSS in the full-time PGDE programme, you have to attend a compulsory Immersion Programme. You need to contribute part of the cost although the University will subsidise a major part of it.
Part C – Interview and Admission
Shortlisted full-time applicants are required to attend an admission interview(s)/test(s) and they will not be considered for admission if they do not turn up for the interviews/tests. However, an part-time applicant who has not been invited to an interview/test shall not assume that he/she is not being considered for admission. Some part-time applicants may receive a direct offer without admission interview/test. They will receive individual notifications by e-mail.
Successful applicants will receive individual notifications by e-mail. The selection process is normally completed by the end of August. Applicants who have not been offered admission by August may assume their applications unsuccessful. No individual notifications will be sent to unsuccessful applicants or waitlisted applicants.
If you receive more than one admission offer, you have to indicate your choice of acceptance in only one programme.
Part D – Others
The programme normally starts in late August or early September. You will receive your personal timetable during programme orientation after registration in mid/late August.
Only full-time students can apply for on-campus accommodation after programme registration. On-campus accommodation places are very competitive. Approval is subject to availability of places.
PGDE classes may be held at Tai Po Campus / Tseung Kwan O Study Centre / North Point Study Centre / Satellite Study Centre in urban locations and/or Sports Centre as decided by the University.
It is dependent on the timetable arrangements of individual programmes. It is possible that you may need to attend classes in the evening with the Part-time PGDE students. You will receive your personal timetable during the programme orientation.
