Teaching Subject Studies (TSS)

English [Code: EG]

This subject study aims to equip participants with a critical understanding of the theory and practice for second language teaching and learning at the primary level, in particular in primary schools in Hong Kong. The core courses promote teaching for understanding while helping young learners develop their oracy and literacy skills in using English as a second language. Approaches, methods and strategies for English teaching and learning are introduced within the local curricular contexts and explored in relation to current learning theories, in particular those pertinent to second language acquisition. Issues related to catering for learner diversity will also be explored to prepare participants to teach in a small class setting. The optional courses provide knowledge in linguistics and applied linguistics which enable participants to develop an essential base for English language teaching. In these subject study courses, participants will be given opportunities to use English for reflective learning and practice as a way to equip them with the attitudes and skills for continual professional development.

Aspiring English language teachers must first meet the government's Language Proficiency Requirement (LPR) requirements. Exemption from LPR requires a relevant degree recognised by the Education Bureau (EDB) plus relevant initial teacher education with specialisation in English and supervised English teaching practice. This programme is recognised by the EDB as providing initial teacher education which can contribute to exemption, but all participants including those with exemptions from LPR will be required to achieve the prescribed standard in classroom language during the programme. As LPR exemptions are determined by the EDB, participants should refer to the EDB for further clarification and information. For more details, please visit www.edb.gov.hk/exemption.

Language proficiency requirement:
www.edb.gov.hk/en/teacher-/qualification-training-development/qualification/language-proficiency-requirement/index.html

For applicants who have a first degree majoring in English intending to study full-time, they may apply for the Scholarship for the Prospective English Teachers offered by the EDB as one of a series of measures to enhance the professionalism of English teachers in Hong Kong. Please refer to www.edb.gov.hk/scholarship.
