Teaching Subject Studies (TSS)

English [Code: EG]

This subject study aims to equip participants with a critical understanding of the theory and practice for second language teaching and learning at the primary level, in particular in primary schools in Hong Kong. The core courses promote teaching for understanding while helping young learners develop their oracy and literacy skills in using English as a second language. Approaches, methods and strategies for English teaching and learning are introduced within the local curricular contexts and explored in relation to current learning theories, in particular those pertinent to second language acquisition. Issues related to catering for learner diversity will also be explored to prepare participants to teach in a small class setting. The optional courses provide knowledge in linguistics and applied linguistics which enable participants to develop an essential base for English language teaching. In these subject study courses, participants will be given opportunities to use English for reflective learning and practice as a way to equip them with the attitudes and skills for continual professional development.

Successful completion of this subject study enables participants to acquire the initial teacher education qualification with specialisation in English language teaching. However, in fulfillment of the qualification requirements specified by the Education Bureau (EDB) for the status of a qualified English language teacher, participants or aspiring English language teachers must also pass the government's Language Proficiency Assessment for Teachers (LPAT) and have a first degree relevant to the subject of the language they teach. In this regard, this subject study does not qualify participants for the LPAT requirements; therefore, it is the participants' responsibility to acquire certification for the required level of LPAT status for language teaching, that is Level 3 or above. Participants are encouraged to either sit for the LPAT to attain Level 3 or above, or seek exemptions from the EDB while undertaking the programme. For details, please refer to:

Language proficiency requirement:

For applicants who have a first degree majoring in English intending to study full-time, they may apply for the Scholarship for the Prospective English Teachers offered by the EDB as one of a series of measures to enhance the professionalism of English teachers in Hong Kong. Please refer to www.edb.gov.hk/scholarship.
