Design and Technology [Code: DT]

The main purpose of this subject study is to prepare participants in teaching technology education at all levels, particularly the Design and Applied Technology (DAT) at the senior secondary level in Hong Kong. This major is unique in that we specifically aim at producing DAT educators and curriculum developers who would contribute to the development of technology education in Hong Kong. This subject attempts to focus on strengthening and broadening the participants’ understanding of the fundamental concepts in technology, creative design and society as well as pedagogical knowledge in teaching and learning technology.

This subject emphasises on the generic pedagogical needs in the teaching practices of technology education, and creative teaching methods will be discussed such as thematic learning conceptual framework, procedural/technological/societal knowledge for design and technology curriculum, strategies in problem solving and assessments. This rigorous study will enable teachers to teach creatively from a holistic point of view, as well as to prepare them for further involvement in technology education development and policy making.

English [Code: EG]

This subject study enables participants to develop the necessary expertise for teaching the English language in Hong Kong secondary classrooms. The core courses offered to both full-time and part-time participants include:

  1. The teaching of four language skills and pedagogical grammar,
  2. Task-based learning and teaching English through language arts and
  3. The English Language curriculum in Hong Kong

These courses help participants develop professional knowledge about the English language curriculum and the pedagogical skills necessary for effective teaching in the secondary classroom.

On top of the normal 9 cps, English majors have to take the 'PGDE English language immersion programme' (in the case of full-time participants) or the course 'Developing interaction in the English language classroom' (in the case of part-time participants), so that they can be better prepared to meet the language proficiency assessment for teachers (LPAT) standard.

'Teaching subjects through English' is an Elective General course offered to non-English major students who are interested in learning better language skills for more effective delivery of the subject they are major in.

All courses adopt a mix of teaching and learning activities e.g. lectures, seminars, workshops, discussions, micro-teaching, etc. Assessment tasks include designing teaching-packages, writing less/unit plans, essay writing and case-analysis.

A key feature of the subject is the emphasis on the specific needs of English language teachers within the local secondary school context. Essential topics and issues in the secondary English language classroom will be reviewed critically. Lectures, seminars, case studies, presentations, workshops (including those using IT facilities) and demonstrations are the principal modes of delivery in the contact sessions, through which participants can explore and expand their knowledge, and experience collaborative learning and doing. In addition, the PGDE English Language Immersion Programme also provides the full-time participants with a valuable opportunity to improve their general and professional English ability through both intensive and extensive language work in English-speaking countries, e.g. Australia and New Zealand. For part-time participants, they will take the course "Developing Interaction in the English Language Classroom" to improve their standards in classroom language.

Beginning 2004/05, aspiring English language teachers must first meet the government's Language Proficiency Assessment for Teachers (LPAT) requirements. Exemption from LPAT requires a relevant degree recognised by the Education Bureau (EDB) plus relevant initial teacher education with specialisation in English and supervised English teaching practice. This programme is recognised by the EDB as providing initial teacher education which can contribute to exemption, but all participants including those with exemptions from the LPAT will be required to achieve the prescribed standard in classroom language during the programme. As LPAT exemptions are determined by the EDB, participants should refer to the EDB for further clarification and information. For more details, please visit www.edb.gov.hk/exemption.

For applicants who have a first degree majoring in English intending to study full-time, they may apply for the Scholarship for the Prospective English Teachers offered by the EDB as one of a series of measures to enhance the professionalism of English teachers in Hong Kong. Please refer to www.edb.gov.hk/scholarship.
