Programme Aims

Upon completion of the programme, participants are expected to: 

  • understand and analyse patriotic education policy in Hong Kong schools; 
  • apply appropriate strategies to strengthen learning and teaching of national history, Chinese culture and national conditions, and to inherit and promote patriotic spirit; 
  • devise diversified school-based strategies regarding the learning and teaching of “one country, two systems” and the cultivation of a sense of national identity in students; and
  • demonstrate the ability to plan and implement patriotic education for primary and secondary schools (parent education can be included) in order to cultivate in students a sense of national identity.

Programme Structure

This programme consists of one 3-credit-point course with a total of 39 contact hours.

This programme consists of related content as below: understand the need and responsibilities of patriotic education in schools; main content of patriotic education including national history, national conditions, Chinese culture, national geography, the Constitution and the Basic Law, national symbols and signs such as the national flag, national anthem, and national emblem, national security, etc. These are all important contents which are connected with The Patriotic Education Law of the People's Republic of China and closely linked with values education and life-wide learning activities. This programme enables participants to understand and apply appropriate strategies to strengthen learning and teaching on national history, Chinese culture and national conditions, and to inherit and promote patriotic spirit enshrined in the Constitution, excellent Chinese traditional values (such as benevolence, diligence, and filial piety), awareness of national unity and ethnic harmony (including the implementation of “one country, two systems” in Hong Kong), the national spirit and spirit of the times embodied in Chinese-style modernization, the Belt and Road Initiative, and the 14th Five-Year Plan, etc. The programme also allows participants to share their experiences in the implementation of patriotic education in Hong Kong schools.

Medium of Instruction

The medium of instruction is mainly Chinese (Cantonese) and will be supplemented by English and Putonghua where appropriate. 

Entrance Requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants should be: 

  • in-service heads of patriotic education (including related subject heads) in primary or secondary schools; and 
  • recommended by school principals. 

Award

To be awarded a Certificate of Completion, participants must obtain a pass in all assessment tasks required and successfully fulfill the attendance requirements as stipulated by the programme. 

Other Information

The programme will be coordinated by Dr WU Siu Wai, who has rich experiences in running professional development programmes for newly appointed school principals and aspiring principals, serving and potential school managers and middle managers. He is also an expert in the teaching of Patriotic Education in Hong Kong Schools, and will be responsible for developing the teaching materials. Experienced heads/teacher leaders of Patriotic Education in schools will be invited to share their practice-oriented knowledge.

Participants who complete our PDPs are eligible to apply for credit transfer if they enroll in our postgraduate programmes. Their applications will be considered on an individual basis.

Remarks: Each school can recommend more than one teacher.

Otherwise, you may commit serious criminal offences under Prevention of Bribery Ordinance (Cap. 201 of the laws of Hong Kong), which is punishable by imprisonment.

Making, submitting or using any false instrument (including forged documents) are serious criminal offences under the Crimes Ordinance (Cap. 200 of the laws of Hong Kong). A person committing the offences relating to forgery or false instruments is liable on conviction on indictment to imprisonment. The University shall consider the relevant evidence and report suspicious cases to the Hong Kong Police. The University reserves the right to take appropriate legal actions against persons who make, forge or use a false instrument for admission and any other academic purposes before, during and after the admission process.

In the event of inconsistency between information in English and Chinese versions or where an interpretation of the programme content is required, the decision of the University shall be final.
