Programme Aims
This programme is designed for school principals who want to make a real difference in their schools through the processes of SSE and the ESR. This programme will critically explore current key issues related to the process of SSE and the ESR, examine the contextual factors that shape principals’ working lives, and provide principals with up-to-date knowledge, theories and strategies to develop and improve their school plans. This programme aims to help principal participants to:
- demonstrate a deep understanding of the nature and processes of school self-evaluation (SSE) and its relationship with the External School Review (ESR), and the Planning-Implementation-Evaluation (PIE) cycle;
- employ a variety of strategies and approaches to embed SSE in day-to-day school practice;
- examine the various contextual factors in order to exploit the ESR as a learning process for schools;
- draw good practices from the education community and form a networked learning community among school practitioners; and
- enhance capacity to design development plans that cater for specific school needs and align with school development stages.
Programme Structure
This programme consists of one three credit-point course (39 hours), i.e. School Improvement and Leadership for Principals, made up of face-to-face lessons and independent study designed for facilitating such tasks as blended learning, library search or group work preparation.
School principals in Hong Kong live and lead in constantly shifting environments in which social, political, cultural and curricular changes have emerged erratically and unpredictably. Ongoing professional learning is essential for principals, who need to continually update their capabilities as educators, administrators and leaders. This Programme is designed for school principals who want to make a real difference in their schools through the processes of SSE and the ESR. Medium of Instruction
The medium of instruction is mainly Chinese (Cantonese) and will be supplemented by English where appropriate.

Entrance Requirements
To be eligible for admission, applicants should be:
- Serving primary, secondary or special education school principals; or
- Vice principals.
Remarks: All applicants should be recommended by school principals (except the school principal himself/ herself).
Award
To be awarded a Certificate of Completion, participants must obtain a pass in all assessment tasks required and successfully fulfill the attendance requirements as stipulated by the programme.
Other Information
Participants who complete our PDPs are eligible to apply for credit transfer if they enroll in our postgraduate programmes. Their applications will be considered on an individual basis.
