Programme Aims

The programme aims to equip PE teachers with advanced knowledge and skills to develop relevant curricula (i.e. Key Stage 1: Fundamental Movement; Key Stage 2 – 3: Internal Assessment, Diverse Sports Activities, and Transition from primary to secondary school; and Key Stage 4: DSE – PE) and implement effective, innovative teaching strategies that promote students' cognitive, social, psychomotor, and cultural learning. A variety of cognitive, social, cultural, and experiential learning and teaching approaches will be introduced, applied, researched, and practiced. The programme will also explore alternative curricular and pedagogical strategies, such as Fundamental Movement Concepts, new diverse sports activities, STEAM in PE, and assessment for learning.

Upon completion of the programme, the participants will be able to:

  • demonstrate critical understanding of the development of school PE worldwide;
  • distinguish the strengths and weaknesses of school PE with reference to the current issues in Hong Kong school PE;
  • develop and test curricular plans for the application of alternative curricular and pedagogical PE models to cultivate students’ cognitive, social, psychomotor and cultural learning through PE;
  • appraise critically the feasibility of promoting and implementing various innovative models for teaching PE in response to Hong Kong school PE;
  • demonstrate professional teaching practice with a positive attitude in Physical Education and a global and multi-cultural perspective; and
  • design and implement digital tools and strategies to enhance learning, teaching, and assessment in PE, fostering critical thinking and adaptability in the digital era.

Programme Structure

The programme comprises the following three core courses of 3 credit points each:

  1. Digital Transformation in Physical Education: Learning and Teaching;
  2. Digital Era Challenges in Hong Kong Physical Education: Issues and Controversies; and
  3. Physical Literacy and Physical Education.

Major teaching and learning activities include lectures, discussion, practical workshops with lesson analysis and trial teaching, and curriculum planning; course participants may be required to try out the teaching in one of the classes at his/her school. Assessment items include reflection report, design of lesson plan and unit plan, group presentation etc.

Topics include:

  • Rationales for pedagogical and curricular advancements in PE, including initiatives like the MVPA60 campaign to promote active lifestyles
  • The role of Assessment for Learning (AfL) in enhancing student engagement in physical activities
  • The Learning-Teaching-Assessment (LTA) Cycle, with a focus on the Senior Secondary PE Elective and PE Internal Assessment (IA) for Secondary School Places Allocation (SSPA)
  • Global trends and developments in School PE in the Digital Era
  • Concepts of Physical Literacy and the design of Fundamental Movements Skills for the Junior Primary School PE Curriculum in the Digital Era

Medium of Instruction

The medium of instruction is mainly Chinese (Cantonese) and will be supplemented by English where appropriate. 

Entrance Requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants should be:

  • in-service primary school and secondary school PE teachers; and 
  • recommended by school principals. 

Remarks:

  • priority of admission will be given to teachers who take charge of relevant education or curriculum reform in school. 
  • each school can recommend more than one teacher for a particular cohort. 
  • applicant’s status as a PE teacher must be clearly indicated in the Principal Recommendation Form for application. 
  • applicants are required to submit evidence / supporting documents on their qualified teaching status (QTS) as a Physical Education (PE) teacher for verification, such as Graduate Certificate, Transcript of Undergraduate / Postgraduate study and Certificate of Registration as a Teacher. Failing to submit such documents will hinder the application process. 

Award

To be awarded a Certificate of Completion, participants must obtain a pass in all assessment tasks required and successfully fulfill the attendance requirements as stipulated by the programme. 

Other Information

This Government-funded programme is supported by the Education Bureau (EDB). Schools which release teachers to take this programme are eligible for appointing supply teachers, if deemed necessary. Government and aided schools shall contact the EDB for detailed arrangements. Private and DSS schools shall make their own arrangements for the employment of supply teachers. 

Participants who complete our PDPs are eligible to apply for credit transfer if they enroll in our postgraduate programmes. Their applications will be considered on an individual basis. 

Remarks: Each school can recommend more than one teacher.

Making, submitting or using any false instrument (including forged documents) are serious criminal offences under the Crimes Ordinance (Cap. 200 of the laws of Hong Kong). A person committing the offences relating to forgery or false instruments is liable on conviction on indictment to imprisonment. The University shall consider the relevant evidence and report suspicious cases to the Hong Kong Police. The University reserves the right to take appropriate legal actions against persons who make, forge or use a false instrument for admission and any other academic purposes before, during and after the admission process.

In the event of inconsistency between information in English and Chinese versions or where an interpretation of the programme content is required, the decision of the University shall be final.
