Programme Aims
The programme aims to enhance participants’ knowledge in music teaching, music creating and school-based curriculum design so as to strengthen their competence in teaching primary or secondary school Music.
On successful completion of the programme, participants will be able to:
- transfer knowledge and use e-learning strategies effectively in the teaching of Cantonese opera and popular music through participation and research;
- formulate appropriate learning assessment strategies to optimise music teaching; and
- enhance musicianship and practical skills such as rehearsal skills, arranging skills and composing techniques.
Programme Structure
The programme comprises the following three core courses of 3 credit points each:
Teaching Cantonese Opera in Schools
Enlisted in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009, Cantonese opera represents Chinese and Guangdong culture. Since the Music Curriculum Guide has suggested that music teachers should include Cantonese operatic music in their school-based curriculum, music teachers are facing the challenge of teaching the genre in class. This course aims to impart in-service teachers’ knowledge about the historical background, styles, structure and categories of Cantonese opera, and develop singing skills and listening capacity so that teachers may teach Cantonese operatic singing and demonstrate with an authentic style. Generating melodies of Aria Types is also included to nurture participants' musical creativity. In addition, technology-based pedagogy and teaching principles will be shared with participants so that they will be confident to teach Cantonese operatic music in class.
The Application of e-Learning in Mobile Music Creation
This course emphasises on the research and practice in how to use tablet (e.g. iPad) in mobile composing in classroom teaching. Mobile composing includes using apps such as GarageBand to learn and compose various musical genres to facilitate learning songwriting and arranging. In-service music teachers will be equipped with the practice, research, curriculum design and innovative approaches in the application of e-learning in music learning from this course.
Popular Music Practices and Their Classroom Applications
This course teaches the rudimentary skills found in popular music practices, equipping the in-service teachers with resources to stay current and to bring popular music into the classroom in a structured and innovative way. The genres that will be touched on include pop, jazz, musical and film music. The participants will develop musicianship and relevant skills through participating in activities such as band-jam sessions, basic contemporary a cappella singing and arranging, and rhythm workshops.
Medium of Instruction
The medium of instruction is mainly Chinese (Cantonese) and will be supplemented by English where appropriate.

Entrance Requirements
To be eligible for admission, applicants should be:
- in-service primary or secondary school Music teachers (applicants who are not currently teaching Music but have relevant teaching experience will also be considered); and
- recommended by school principals.
Remarks: Priority of admission will be given to applicants who are Panel Chairpersons, Curriculum Leaders, or teachers responsible for the development of school-based Music curriculum.
Award
To be awarded a Certificate of Completion, participants must obtain a pass in all assessment tasks required and successfully fulfill the attendance requirements as stipulated by the programme.
Other Information
This Government-funded programme is supported by the Education Bureau (EDB). Schools which release teachers to take this programme are eligible for appointing supply teachers, if deemed necessary. Government and aided schools shall contact the EDB for detailed arrangements. Private and DSS schools shall make their own arrangements for the employment of supply teachers.
Participants who complete our PDPs are eligible to apply for credit transfer if they enroll in our postgraduate programmes. Their applications will be considered on an individual basis.
Remarks: Each school can recommend more than one teacher.
