Programme Aims

Upon successful completion of this programme, participants will be able to:

  • demonstrate essential understanding about formative assessment of Primary Science in local curriculum;
  • design tasks of formative assessment that can promote science learning.

Programme Structure

The programme consists of one 1-credit-point course.

Effective Assessment for Science Learning (1 credit point)

This course equips teacher participants to design and implement effective assessment for science learning. The course will first introduce multiple purposes for assessment in relation to science learning. In response to these purposes, key characteristics of assessment and valid assessment approaches as well as procedures will be highlighted. Furthermore, teaching for and assessment of development, in relation to conceptual understanding, skills as well as attitudes, will be shed light to inform teacher participants how assessment and feedback can be contributed to student development of science learning in classroom. As a whole, effective classroom assessments are expected, in which teacher participants become facilitator and students are empowered to re-define their role in learning of science.

Medium of Instruction

The medium of instruction is mainly Chinese (Cantonese) and will be supplemented by English where appropriate.

Entrance Requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants should be:

  • in-service primary school teachers who will be teaching Primary Science; and
  • recommended by principals of their serving schools.

Award

To be awarded a Certificate of Completion, participants must obtain a pass in all assessment tasks required and successfully fulfill the attendance requirements as stipulated by the programme.

Remarks: Each school can recommend more than one teacher.

Making, submitting or using any false instrument (including forged documents) are serious criminal offences under the Crimes Ordinance (Cap. 200 of the laws of Hong Kong). A person committing the offences relating to forgery or false instruments is liable on conviction on indictment to imprisonment. The University shall consider the relevant evidence and report suspicious cases to the Hong Kong Police. The University reserves the right to take appropriate legal actions against persons who make, forge or use a false instrument for admission and any other academic purposes before, during and after the admission process.

In the event of inconsistency between information in English and Chinese versions or where an interpretation of the programme content is required, the decision of the University shall be final.
