Programme Aims

This programme aims to help in-service primary school teachers to:

  • compare the experiences of different regions in promoting values education and how it can broaden teachers' perspectives;
  • explore diverse teaching strategies and assessment methods for values education seeing how it can also be beneficial;
  • incorporate elements of values education in subjects/ cross-disciplinary curriculum organically;
  • acquire the knowledge and skills of adopting a whole-school approach for planning and implementing context-specific values education programmes;
  • engage in professional dialogues and enhance practical skills, seeing how they can further enhance the ability to implement values education effectively;
  • uphold high moral standards and be proper in words and deeds as role model for instilling in students the proper values and positive attitudes.

Programme Structure

Based on the needs of contemporary Hong Kong students, this PDP explores the 12 primary values cultivated in the "Values Education Curriculum Framework" and how they are used throughout various learning areas, subjects and learning activities, allowing students to trigger "emotion" from "cognition" and then ‘take action’.

The program includes a total of 3 credit points and covers the following topics:

  • The Concept, Characteristics, and Trends of Values Education;
  • Values Education Curriculum Framework (Pilot Version) " (2021, 2023) twelve priority values and attitudes: "Perseverance", "Respect for Others", "Responsibility", "National Identity", "Commitment", "Integrity", "Benevolence", "Law-abidingness", "Empathy", "Diligence”, "Unity" and “Filial Piety”;
  • Teaching Strategies for Values Education: diversified strategies, mutual co-ordination, organic integration, natural connection, learning within and beyond the classroom and whole-school participation, among various cross-curricular domains including moral education, civic education, national education, anti-drug education, life education, sex education, media and information literacy education, education for sustainable development, human rights education under the legal framework, etc.;
  • Implementation of Values Education by making use of everyday life events: the balanced integration of “knowledge (cognition)”, emotion (affection)”, and “action (practice)”;
  • Assessment methods for Values Education.

Medium of Instruction

The medium of instruction is mainly Chinese (Cantonese) and will be supplemented by English where appropriate.

Entrance Requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants should be:

  • in-service primary school teachers
  • recommended by school principals

Award

To be awarded a Certificate of Completion, participants must obtain a pass in all assessment tasks required and successfully fulfill the attendance requirements as stipulated by the programme.

Other Information

This Government-funded programme is supported by the Education Bureau (EDB). Schools which release teachers to take this programme are eligible for appointing supply teachers, if deemed necessary. Government and aided schools shall contact the EDB for detailed arrangements. Private and Direct Subsidy Scheme schools shall make their own arrangements for the employment of supply teachers.

Participants who complete our PDPs are eligible to apply for credit transfer if they enroll in our postgraduate programmes. Their applications will be considered on an individual basis.

Remarks: Each school can recommend more than one teacher.

Otherwise, you may commit serious criminal offences under Prevention of Bribery Ordinance (Cap. 201 of the laws of Hong Kong), which is punishable by imprisonment.

Making, submitting or using any false instrument (including forged documents) are serious criminal offences under the Crimes Ordinance (Cap. 200 of the laws of Hong Kong). A person committing the offences relating to forgery or false instruments is liable on conviction on indictment to imprisonment. The University shall consider the relevant evidence and report suspicious cases to the Hong Kong Police. The University reserves the right to take appropriate legal actions against persons who make, forge or use a false instrument for admission and any other academic purposes before, during and after the admission process.

In the event of inconsistency between information in English and Chinese versions or where an interpretation of the programme content is required, the decision of the University shall be final.
