Programme Aims

The programme aims to acquaint serving Physical Education teachers with knowledge and skills in developing relevant curriculum and carrying out effective and innovative activities for promoting students’ various learning outcome in PE and interdisciplinary collaboration with STEAM approach. In order to cater for diverse learning needs and abilities of the students, various strategies with STEAM approach will be introduced, applied, researched and practiced in order to develop and stimulate students’ interest on PE so as to develop a regular exercise habit for all-round well-being.

Programme Structure

The programme comprises the following three core courses of 3 credit points each:

New Technology in Sports and PE

The use of technology in teaching and learning is a trend on education. To advance students in technology and information systems, PE also has an important place within the education framework. To create dynamic and innovative PE lessons, a variety of technologies will be used in this course. This course aims to provide the PE teachers with the latest technology used on sport and PE in order to appeal to the interests of diverse students’ ability as well as using new technology to create teaching activities for PE lessons.

Introduction to Sports and Exercise Science

The course will introduce the evolving discipline of sports and exercise science including its academic sub-disciplines and how these relate to teaching of PE. It provides PE teachers a fundamental understanding of biomechanics, physiology, and psychology in the context of human performance and health promotion. Participants will recognise the interaction between each field and how each field can be used to improve sports performance and promote health.

Learning and Teaching in PE with STEAM Approach

The course aims to acquaint PE teachers with knowledge and skills in STEAM education to develop relevant curriculum and implement effective and innovative pedagogies for strengthening the learning experiences for students’ cognitive STEAM thinking skills, social, psychomotor as well as cultural learning for students at Key Stage 2, 3 and 4. A variety of learning methods are employed, such as problem-based learning (PBL), discovery learning, and exploratory learning. This program emphasizes science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics to cater to students with a diversity of needs and abilities. Students who actively participate in PE learning will learn about, apply, research and practice solutions for problems in schools. Within the course, innovative curricular and pedagogical models like blended learning, flipped learning strategies, problem-based learning strategies and so on will also be studied.

Medium of Instruction

The medium of instruction is mainly Chinese (Cantonese) and will be supplemented by English where appropriate.

Entrance Requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants should be:

  1. in-service primary school and secondary school PE teachers; and
  2. recommended by school principals.

Remarks:

  • Priority of admission will be given to teachers who take charge of STEAM-related curriculum development in school.
  • Each school can recommend more than one teacher for a particular cohort.
  • Applicant’s status as a PE teacher must be clearly indicated in the Principal Recommendation Form for application.
  • Applicants are required to submit evidence / supporting documents on their qualified teaching status (QTS) as a Physical Education (PE) teacher for verification, such as Graduate Certificate, Transcript of Undergraduate / Postgraduate study and Certificate of Registration as a Teacher. Failing to submit such documents will hinder the application process.

Award

To be awarded a Certificate of Completion, participants must obtain a pass in all assessment tasks required and successfully fulfill the attendance requirements as stipulated by the programme.

Other Information

This Government-funded programme is supported by the Education Bureau (EDB). Schools which release teachers to take this programme are eligible for supply teachers, if deemed necessary. Government and aided schools shall contact the EDB for detailed arrangements. Private and DSS schools shall make their own arrangements for the employment of supply teachers.

Participants who complete our PDPs are eligible to apply for credit transfer if they enroll in our postgraduate programmes. Their applications will be considered on an individual basis.
