Programme Aims

The programme aims to improve teachers’ knowledge and skills in the teaching of English in primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong, with a particular focus on teaching grammar in context through text-based, meaning-focused pedagogy and the principled and responsible use of generative AI to support learning and teaching. It will focus on areas of English language knowledge and skills relevant to the current needs of teachers in the local school sector, with particular emphasis on the implementation of recent updates in the English Language curriculum, and on emerging developments in educational technology and assessment practices.

Upon completion of the programme, participants should be able to:

  • Review and reflect on the current practices of grammar teaching in context in English classrooms in Hong Kong and make informed pedagogical improvements;
  • Develop an understanding of updated strategies of English language teaching and learning, including how to evaluate, adapt and integrate AI-supported resources to enhance learning while ensuring accuracy, learner appropriateness and alignment with learning purposes; and
  • Design and trial practical ideas, activities and resources (including AI-supported materials where appropriate) to help students develop English, and to support responsible AI use (e.g., transparency, privacy and academic honesty) in classroom learning.

Programme Structure

The programme comprises the following course:

Using AI to Teach Grammar (3 credit points)

This course focuses on using AI to enhance the teaching of grammar in context for KS2 and KS3 English classrooms. Building on a text-based, meaning-focused approach, it equips participants with practical strategies to (i) design contextualised grammar tasks, (ii) use generative AI to support materials creation, adaptation and differentiation, and (iii) provide feedback that helps learners notice and use grammatical forms to construct meaning. Participants will critically evaluate AI-generated language content and teaching suggestions, refine outputs for learner level and instructional purpose, and address ethical considerations such as transparency, privacy and academic honesty. Teachers will analyse and adapt sample learning materials and produce lesson-ready resources for their own teaching contexts.
