Programme Aims

To enhance teachers’ knowledge and skills in teaching English in primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong, focusing on the integration of literary and creative genres in alignment with the latest developments in the English Language curriculum.

Upon completion of the programme, participants will be able to:

  • Critically evaluate and reflect on current English teaching practices in Hong Kong schools;
  • Understand and implement updated strategies for English language teaching and learning, with an emphasis on literary and creative genres; and
  • Explore and apply practical ideas and activities that support students’ English language development through engaging literary and creative approaches.

Programme Structure

The programme comprises the following course:

Enhancing Learning in the English Language KLA with Literary and Creative Genres (3 credit points)

According to the English Language Education Key Learning Area (KLA) Curriculum Guide (Primary 1 to Secondary 6) (2017), the use of literary and creative works serves to complement the subject of English Language and further enhance students’ English language proficiency by providing them with opportunities to interact with literary texts and explore the aesthetic, intellectual, cultural and emotional aspects of language learning. This course aims to broaden practicing English Language teachers’ repertoire of pedagogical knowledge and skills to use a wide range of literary and creative genres to enhance students’ learning in the English Language Education KLA. The course will run through five Saturdays and the topics include: (1) drama in English language teaching, (2) exploring visual literacy through graphic novels, (3) creative poetry writing, (4) using children’s literature in the English classroom, and (5) reading and writing for pleasure.

Medium of Instruction

The medium of instruction is English.

Entrance Requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants should be: 

  • in-service primary or secondary school English Language teachers in Hong Kong; and
  • recommended by school principals.

Award

To be awarded a Certificate of Completion, participants must obtain a pass in all assessment tasks required and successfully fulfill the attendance requirements as stipulated by the programme.

Making, submitting or using any false instrument (including forged documents) are serious criminal offences under the Crimes Ordinance (Cap. 200 of the laws of Hong Kong). A person committing the offences relating to forgery or false instruments is liable on conviction on indictment to imprisonment. The University shall consider the relevant evidence and report suspicious cases to the Hong Kong Police. The University reserves the right to take appropriate legal actions against persons who make, forge or use a false instrument for admission and any other academic purposes before, during and after the admission process.

In the event of inconsistency between information in English and Chinese versions or where an interpretation of the programme content is required, the decision of the University shall be final.
