Programme Aims
The programme is designed for in-service teachers in Hong Kong kindergartens. Upon completion of the programme, participants are expected to demonstrate an understanding of play theories, especially through learning local and global practices. The programme will also provide an opportunity for participants to practice skills for conducting successful play activities in their classrooms and to integrate play practices into their pedagogies to embrace children’s characteristics and diverse needs.
Programme Structure
The programme consists of one 3-credit-point course with a total of 39 hours.
This course will focus on:
- identifying the definitions, perspectives and diversity of play;
- explaining the role and importance of play in early childhood education;
- employing different play pedagogies and play theories when designing playtime and observing children’s play behaviours; and
- evaluating and reflecting on the appropriateness and effectiveness of different play pedagogies.
Medium of Instruction
The medium of instruction is mainly Chinese (Cantonese) and will be supplemented by English where appropriate.

Entrance Requirements
To be eligible for admission, applicants should be:
- in-service teachers currently working in a local preschool; and
- recommended by their school principals.
Award
To be awarded a Certificate of Completion, participants must obtain a pass in all assessment tasks required and successfully fulfill the attendance and/or assessment requirements as stipulated by the programme.
Other Information
Participants who complete our PDPs are eligible to apply for credit transfer if they enroll in our postgraduate programmes. Their applications will be considered on an individual basis.
