Programme Aims

This programme is designed to help ESL/EFL teachers integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into their teaching to enhance English language teaching and digital literacy.

Upon completion of the programme, participants will be able to:

Content Objectives

  • Understand the role of AI in English language teaching.
  • Learn about AI tools and their applications in the English classroom.

Pedagogical Objectives

  • Implement AI-driven and innovative strategies to personalize English language learning and assessment.
  • Use AI to enhance feedback and media and information literacy.
  • Select and use AI tools responsibly to address diverse student needs and foster whole-person development.

This programme equips teachers with the skills to effectively integrate AI into their teaching practices, fostering engagement and preparing students for a digital world.

Programme Structure

The programme comprises the following course:

AI in the Classroom: Innovative Strategies for Enhancing English Language Teaching (3 credit points)

This course is designed to enhance the digital literacy of ESL/EFL teachers at the primary and secondary levels, specifically focusing on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into English language teaching. Participants will explore how AI can effectively support teaching and learning in the English Language curriculum. The course will provide a thorough understanding of AI tools and their applications in the classroom, enabling teachers to tailor their instructional strategies to meet diverse student needs and align with educational objectives. Key concepts will include AI-driven personalised learning, assessment for/as learning, feedback mechanisms, and media and information literacy in the context of AI. Teachers will learn to select and implement AI tools responsibly, fostering an ethical approach to technology use among students. This course ensures that AI integration enhances teaching effectiveness and student engagement in ESL/EFL settings, preparing learners for a technologically advanced world.

Medium of Instruction

The medium of instruction is English.

Entrance Requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants should be: 

  • in-service primary or secondary school English Language teachers in Hong Kong; and
  • recommended by school principals.

Award

To be awarded a Certificate of Completion, participants must obtain a pass in all assessment tasks required and successfully fulfill the attendance requirements as stipulated by the programme. 

Other Information

This Government-funded programme is supported by the Education Bureau (EDB). Schools which release teachers to take this programme are eligible for appointing supply teachers, if deemed necessary. Government and aided schools shall contact the EDB for detailed arrangements. Private and DSS schools shall make their own arrangements for the employment of supply teachers. 

Remarks: Each school can recommend more than one teacher.

Making, submitting or using any false instrument (including forged documents) are serious criminal offences under the Crimes Ordinance (Cap. 200 of the laws of Hong Kong). A person committing the offences relating to forgery or false instruments is liable on conviction on indictment to imprisonment. The University shall consider the relevant evidence and report suspicious cases to the Hong Kong Police. The University reserves the right to take appropriate legal actions against persons who make, forge or use a false instrument for admission and any other academic purposes before, during and after the admission process.

In the event of inconsistency between information in English and Chinese versions or where an interpretation of the programme content is required, the decision of the University shall be final.
