Programme Aims

This programme aims to help in-service secondary school teachers to:

  • compare the experiences of different regions in promoting values education, so as to broaden teachers' perspectives;
  • support schools in planning and implementing school-based values education;
  • explore diversified teaching and review strategies for values education tailored to secondary students' developmental characteristics at different stages, and understand their effectiveness;
  • enhance teachers’ capacity to promote values education through participation in professional dialogue that facilitates exchange and reflection on curriculum planning and teaching practices;
  • recognise and uphold the teacher’s role in nurturing students, by modelling high moral standards and setting good examples.

Programme Structure

This Professional Development Programme (PDP) has been developed in accordance with the recommendations of the Values Education Curriculum Framework (Pilot Version) adopting Chinese culture as its backbone. Its objective is to strengthen participants' understanding of the rationale and content of the values education curriculum, as well as their professional capacity to incorporate elements of values education into various Key Learning Areas, subjects, and life-wide learning activities. Ultimately, the goal is to foster proper values and positive attitudes towards life among students, and practise appropriate behaviour.

The program includes a total of 3 credit points and covers the following topics:

  • The importance, curriculum development and key contents of values education;
  • The connotation of the twelve priority values and attitudes recommended by the Education Bureau for student development;
  • The scope and content of the cross-curricular domains of values education, including moral and ethical education, civic education, national education (covering the Constitution and Basic Law education, national security education and patriotic education), health education (including anti-drug education, resistance to harmful substances, and fostering physical and psychological well-being), life education, sex education, media and information literacy education, education for sustainable development, and human rights education under the legal framework;
  • Overall planning and implementation strategies for values education (including “organic integration,” “natural connection,” “diverse strategies,” “mutual coordination,” “learning within and beyond the classroom,” and “whole-school participation”, with a view to nurture students from the cognitive (knowledge), affective (emotion), and practical (action) dimensions);
  • Review and evaluation of for Values Education.

Medium of Instruction

The medium of instruction is mainly Chinese (Cantonese) and will be supplemented by English where appropriate.

Entrance Requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants should be:

  • in-service secondary school teachers; and
  • recommended by school principals.

Award

To be awarded a Certificate of Completion, participants must obtain a pass in all assessment tasks required and successfully fulfill the attendance requirements as stipulated by the programme.

Other Information

This Government-funded programme is supported by the Education Bureau (EDB). Schools which release teachers to take this programme are eligible for appointing supply teachers, if deemed necessary. Government and aided schools shall contact the EDB for detailed arrangements. Private and Direct Subsidy Scheme schools shall make their own arrangements for the employment of supply teachers.

Participants who complete our PDPs are eligible to apply for credit transfer if they enroll in our postgraduate programmes. Their applications will be considered on an individual basis.

Remarks: Each school can recommend more than one teacher.

Making, submitting or using any false instrument (including forged documents) are serious criminal offences under the Crimes Ordinance (Cap. 200 of the laws of Hong Kong). A person committing the offences relating to forgery or false instruments is liable on conviction on indictment to imprisonment. The University shall consider the relevant evidence and report suspicious cases to the Hong Kong Police. The University reserves the right to take appropriate legal actions against persons who make, forge or use a false instrument for admission and any other academic purposes before, during and after the admission process.

In the event of inconsistency between information in English and Chinese versions or where an interpretation of the programme content is required, the decision of the University shall be final.
